BRITISH CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS SCHEME

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the United Kingdom is offering two or three postgraduate scholarships under the Chevening scheme to undertake study on courses of up to one year’s duration during the 2011-2012 academic year at any British university, starting in September/October 2011.  These scholarships will be of particular interest to professional people in Chile who wish to develop their knowledge and qualifications in their own specialist area.

This year the British Embassy is looking for high quality applications related to the following fields of post-graduate study:

•         Sustainable Energy Policy
•         Climate Change/Green Growth
•         Financial Services

We will not this year be able to consider applications in other academic areas apart from these three. In addition to the Chevening scheme, in 2011-12 a ‘Mansion House’ scholarship, sponsored by the Lord Mayor of London’s office, is available for study directly related to the financial services sector.   This can be used to part-fund post-graduate study, or for other courses of less than a year’s duration.  Preference will be given to an individual looking to study in a topic which brings together the financial services sector and the mining industry.  Further information on the Mansion House scholarships is available at http://www.mansionhousescholars.org.uk/

Notes for Chevening & Mansion House scholarships

All applications must be made online and in English via the e-chevening system here.

Applicants in Chile should be Chilean nationals holding a university degree and with at least 2 year´s professional experience in an area related to their proposed field of study.

The closing date for all applications is Tuesday 19 April and the expected time-line for awarding scholarships is

•19 April: Applications close
•25-27 April: Short-listed applicants invited to interview informed
•w/2 2 May: Interviews of short-listed candidates take place in Santiago
•By 13 May: Successful candidates informed.

Additional notes relating to Chevening applications

Given the timing of this year´s Chevening scheme, all candidates applying for scholarships must already have begun their application process to the UK institutions of their interest.

Scholarship benefits

The extent of benefits may vary depending on whether a full or partial scholarship can be awarded. A full scholarship includes the following

•Tuition fees and matriculation costs
•Return travel to and from the UK
•Monthly stipend
•Health cover through the National Health System

Chevening scholarships do not provide benefits to cover the costs of any family members, spouses or partners. Scholars who wish to be accompanied by their partner and/or children must provide documentation that demonstrates that these living costs can be met independently. This documentation will be required before travelling to the UK at the moment of applying for travel visas.

Restrictions

The Chevening scholars are exclusive and incompatible with any other scholarship awarded to the candidate either before or after applying. The only additional scholarships that are acceptable are independent awards made to support the living and travel costs of accompanying partners and children.

Notes relating particularly to Mansion House scholarships

The Mansion House award is separate to the Chevening awards, but interested applicants are required to apply online through the echevening system. Applicants whose subject of study fits the criteria for the Mansion House award will automatically be considered for both Chevening and Mansion House awards. There may, however, be some applicants who only wish to be considered for a Mansion House award (for instance, if they only wish to embark on a course of study that is for a shorter duration than a one-year course). These candidates should indicate on the application form that they only wish to be considered for the Mansion House award.
